home again

i’m back. i feel exhausted and disoriented. i think i need a vacation after my vacation. going on vacation is like making love. it drains you out. at the same time, it makes you feel good that you want to do it over again and again.

i’d write about the european trip in a few days. by then, i expect to recover from the jet lag and be able to collect my thoughts. i don’t know why but i don’t suffer jet lag when i go to the philippines or europe. i experience it only after returning from the trip.

one of the pleasures of coming home is finding things as they were as if you’ve never left, such as an unmade bed, a pair of dirty socks on the floor, and an empty toiler paper roll begging to be changed.

but nothing stands still in other areas.

while i was gone, a big apartment complex nearby was torn down. the local hospital owns the property and plans to build the main hospital building there.

bart (subway) has increased its fares by 6.1 percent and enacted a $2.50 surcharge on trips to and from the san francisco international airport. boy, that’s a whopping change for commuters like me. bus fares have also increased from $1.75 to $2.

and who would have thought that, in a span of the last few weeks, the following celebrities would have left us: michael jackson, farrah fawcett, karl malden, robert mcnamara, ed mc mahon, alexis arguello, and steve mc nair? life is, indeed, short. it’s an irony that the truth hits us only when it’s too late.

before i left for my vacation, i’d signed up as a member of the race crew for tomorrow’s run to the lake event in my hometown. i find it a good way of connecting with the local community. hopefully, it’ll help clear my head, too. i’m looking forward to it.

    Maligayang pagbabalik.
