divine wrath or coincidence

tropical storm ondoy (international name: ketsana) came to the philippines like an avenging angel. it was as if nature had conspired to punish the filipino people who have lost their faith in the leadership of president gloria macapagal-arroyo. in the metropolitan manila and suburbs, where her approval ratings are the lowest in the nation, ondoy wrought the most havoc affecting millions of people. it triggered the worst flooding in 40 years causing death and destruction in its path.

tropical storm pepeng (international name: parma) followed a few days later. it vented its fury on the rest of luzon where the president’s approval ratings showed the biggest drop in the latest social weather stations (sws) survey results. pepeng deluged luzon with rain, swelling rivers and flooding towns, and causing mudslides that buried people alive.

president macapagal-arroyo came to power in 2001 after then president joseph estrada was forced out of office for plunder and corruption. she came like a divine gift supported by church’s leaders, civil society, army, and business groups. she believed in her heart that the presidency is “made in heaven” and that it’s up to god to make one president.

in 2002, she announced that she wouldn’t seek re-election because god had told her not to run. but she changed her mind shortly thereafter and ran anyway. how could she disobey her god? by this time, she must have switched allegiance to the god of mammon.

amidst widespread cheating, she won against the top contender, fernando poe, jr.

since then, president macapagal-arroyo has been beset with scandals after scandals such as cheating in the 2004 presidential elections, tolerating if not accepting bribes and kickbacks on government projects, silencing political opponents through fear and intimidation, and making deals to foreign countries inimical to the sovereignty of the country.

through it all, she holds on to power making one close ally to declare that she’s indeed one lucky b*tch.

it doesn’t hurt that she’s able to run the country under a mafia-style patronage system that rewards loyalty and blind obedience above all else. under this scenario, those in power can do anything with impunity as long as they toe the administration line. anybody caught with his hand in the cookie jar can absolve himself just by taking his hand off. dissent is tolerated but never encouraged. whistleblowers find themselves whistling in the dark. they become heroes for a day and end up being sued, losing their jobs, and reputations.

it must also help that she’s a woman of faith. according to press secretary cerge remonde, the president is a very prayerful person and that she attends mass and goes to confession every day. he added that she has been in the habit of constantly communing and consulting with god whenever she has to make any decision. incidentally, why does she have to go confession every day? but i digress.

although macapagal-arroyo has been dubbed as the most corrupt president in philippine history, she’s determined to stay in power beyond her current term either through martial law or a constitutional amendment. let the filipino people be forewarned. the fact that god and the church’s top hierarchy are silent on the issue could be considered proof of her divine right.

so far, the visayas and mindanao, where president macapagal-arroyo remains popular, are spared from devastation. however, her approval ratings are starting to fall there, too. could this mean it’s just a matter of time when the whole country goes under water unless the filipino people finally acknowledge her authority to lord over them and do as she pleases? has she become so powerful that even nature would do her bidding to punish those who defy her? the answer is a resounding no. who do you think she is? the recent tragedy in the philippines was more likely due to climate change than to her mumbo jumbo.

she made unpopular decisions, ok. but the bright side of it…marami na tayong infrastructures that are very vital to our country’s progress!

i have personal hatred for PGMA and the way she protected her reign by appointing people not for their skill and qualification but for her own gain. i would be divulging too much and i can’t do it because it is not my story to tell, but i am glad that she’s not president anymore…

and i am praying that it stays that way
(she is very sly, that woman)
