gone going

i’m leaving for washington, d.c. tomorrow. it’s a 7-hour flight from the oakland international airport. i’ll be gone, but not for long. i’ll be back in 10 days.

it’s a good time to visit the nation’s capital in the early spring when the national cherry blossom festival is held. it’s scheduled march 27 thru april 11 this year and expected to draw more than one million people.

a visitor will see the capital at its best with the cherry trees around the tidal basin and east potomac park in full bloom. the trees were given to the united states as a gift of friendship from the people of japan during the early part of the last century.

with the winter over, the weather has become more hospitable. it’s less likely that someone unaccustomed to the cold will freeze and become a human statue along the national mall. as a result, he’ll have lots of time to enjoy the view and the festivities all around the area to his heart’s content.

the district of columbia is the heart of america. the white house and the u.s. capitol buildings are located there. it’s home to national landmarks and memorials that constantly remind us of the country’s rich history. it exudes power. it intimidates. it inspires awe. the presence of cherry blossoms in dark pink and white somewhat makes the place more hospitable and less forbidding.

i don’t know why but when i look at cherry blossoms, i see them as a metaphor for young geishas as they come of age. their beauty and seeming fragility belie the hidden power that can make or break a man.

it’ll be a hectic schedule, but if i manage my time wisely, i’ll be able to visit a couple of the museums. admissions to the smithsonian museums are free, so it’s something i take advantage of whenever i’m in the neighborhood. this time i’m thinking of the national museum of american history and the smithsonian american art museum.

i hope you, you, and especially you will miss me while i’m away, but reality sucks. i ain’t holding my breath.
