i’m back, but not quite

i missed the cherry blossoms when i arrived in d.c. on april 7. you can blame it on climate change. they came early and the unusually warm weather at this time of the year made sure they left early as well. walking along the potomac river, i saw a few traces of them laying on the ground close to the trees where they fell.

it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, to quote from charles dickens.

during my stay there, it felt like summer with the temperature hovering in the upper 70s. however, it provided no relief to allergy sufferers like me. the long wet winter had provided the trees, plants, and weeds the incentive to release more tiny particles called pollens making the pollen count in the nation’s capital one of the worst in the nation. nature has intended these tiny particles to become airborne and seek flowers to fertilize. but many fail in their undertaking and end up being inhaled by unsuspecting tourists and passerbys causing them to sneeze, to itch, to have runny noses, to have watery eyes, etc.

i found washington, d.c. in a frenzy over many things. unfortunately, i was too engrossed in the moment to record them in my cell phone camera for posterity.

it was the time when the annual cherry blossoms festival was in full swing featuring more than 200 international cultural performances and over 90 other special events. during lunchtime, i was able to watch some performances held near the washington memorial.

it was also the time when president obama held a summit and met with 44 nations to discuss nuclear security. with the presence of many heads of state in the capital, extremely tight security measures were put in place, especially around the convention center resulting in traffic reroutings, road closures, and parking restrictions. these measures had inconvenienced many tourists and accidental guests. but what the heck! better to be safe than sorry.

it was also the time when the tea party cross-country tour ended with a rally at the washington freedom plaza. this is a group of mostly conservative republicans who believe that president obama is a socialist. they opposed him on the healthcare bill. when it passed, it angered them more. they’re very determined to bring down his presidency. sometimes, i wonder if they oppose his agenda because he happens to be black. it’s my belief that at the end of the day, he’ll be regarded as one of the best presidents in u.s. history. i hope he survives his term and not be assassinated like lincoln and kennedy. he’s been receiving more death threats than any presidents in recent memory.

i thought i wouldn’t be able to go to the national museum of american history as planned. according to the metro (subway) pocket guide, it’s closed. but when i passed by there, the sign says “open during renovation”. i found the exhibits limited, though. for example, there’s nothing much on the philippine-american war. i found only this display of a pair of straw slippers.

there were more exhibits the last time i visited three years ago including rebel arms, uniforms, and regalia. hopefully, they’ll be back when the renovation of the museum is completed.

the flight back to california took 10 hours. by then, i was tired and exhausted. i was getting sick. after fighting a constant battle of allergies, i felt my immune system finally gave in. i was toast. a few days after arriving home, i still have this cold and nasty cough. but things are getting back to normal. i’m up and about and out of bed and had my shave this morning. you betcha, i’ll be well in a day or two.
