The Issue With Bottled Water

It seems that nowadays you can’t go wrong when you speak about global warming. Mr. Al Gore, the man who was elected president but never served due to technicalities, redeemed himself by being the leading spokesperson on global warming. According to Mr. Gore, the problem is “us” and he has the backings of many scientists.

To be fair, there are other scientists who believe that it ain’t so. Their studies have shown that the warming trend also applies to the other planets in our solar system as far as Pluto where no human beings can be found driving SUVs. They believe that the main culprit is the sun. Of course, the scientists behind Mr. Gore have pooh-poohed their findings as hogwash.

Anyway, I believe each side of the argument has a point. If forced to choose between the two, however, you’ll find me on the side of Mr. Gore. After all, he won an OSCAR for his efforts.

One additional risk to global warming that Mr. Gore hasn’t expanded on is bottled water. In a way, I don’t blame him. Bottled water looks so harmless that its potential for mischief is easy to overlook.

The issue with bottled water is that it doesn’t come cheap as far as energy consumption is concerned. To start with, it uses plastic for container which is derived from oil. It costs energy to manufacture the container, to fill it up with water, to package it, to deliver it, and to dispose of it and recycle it once you’re done. Lots of energy are expended through all these processes, which contribute to global warming.

Bottled water is a luxury we can’t afford if we care about the environment and the future of our planet. It’s the most environmentally incorrect way to quench our thirst. Besides, who really needs it? Tests after tests have shown that bottled water is no better than tap water. It’s also expensive. It costs more than gas. At that price, it cuts into other basic necessities like beer and pretzels.

I hope that Mr. Al Gore will continue the momentum he has built on bringing out the threat of global warming to everybody who would listen. This he can do by taking on the danger that bottled water poses as well.
