Going Home

E.T. The Extra-Terrestial

All my bags are packed and I’m ready to go, as the song goes. In a few days, I’m going home to the Philippines. Home? Well, it’s probably not the right word. Didn’t Tom Wolfe say that you can’t go home again?

I haven’t been back for the past 10 years. During that time, I told my mother and sister to come and visit me in the U.S. instead. My mother came several times and so did my sister and her husband. These trips gave them the opportunity to go to places they had never been like San francisco, Disneyland, District of Columbia, New York City, Niagara falls, New Orleans, Disneyworld, and Chicago.

This year, however, I feel it’s time for me to go home. When I told my friend about it, he said that so much have changed during my absence that I won’t recognize our town anymore. It has fallen prey to progress. The high school where I graduated is now a college. The Catholic Church has had a facelift. The old municipal hall is gone and replaced by a modern one. The public market has been expanded to accommodate more vendors. All the major streets have been paved. In addition, there’s now running water, cable tv, and internet available to those who can afford them. I’m sure there’ll be more surprises including our renovated house. Darn, I’m told my old bedroom is gone.

Lately, I had this dream that my deceased father and I were driving home. The road was flooded with the waters sometime reaching up to the windshield. We stopped from time to time to assess the situation. In one of our stops, a church, I pulled my cell phone and started taking pictures. Inside the church, I was surprised to find my aunt standing by my dead body being blessed by our former parish priest who, like my father, had already died. Is this a bad premonition or what?

Tom Wolfe, in his famous novel, You Can’t Go Home Again (1940), wrote:

You can’t go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, … back home to a young man’s dreams of glory and of fame … back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time … back home to the escapes of Time and Memory.

Well said, Mr. Wolfe, but I’m not going back to my boyhood home permanently. Just for a few weeks. Maybe I’d get break? I’m good. I can sleep on the couch.

In the meantime, bye for now. I’ll be off from blogging until I return.
