has spring finally arrived?

after experiencing unrelenting storm after storm in march, we’re starting to see the light. the weather has been great lately. it’s been mostly sunny with temperature in the high 60s. forecast for the next 10 days is expected to be the same except for scattered showers on friday. has spring, supposed to start last month, finally arrived? the sudden appearance of the ducks outside our office building seems to confirm it. it was last thursday when the security guard told me that they are back swimming in the man-made pool. they have returned to start a family once again.

‘is it the same pair?’ i wondered.

‘it is,’ she exclaimed as she checked my badge.

i believed her. she’s got sharp eyes for somebody in her late 50s.

the ducks weren’t the only ones who visited us last week. our second level manager and third level manager were also in town. they told us that last year was a banner year for the company and congratulated us on a job well done. at the same time, they reminded us that it was all in the past. with the completion of our merger with another company, they said that we should focus on the unfinished work ahead. combining the resources of these merged companies would be our greatest challenge this year. management expects it to be done in august. anyway you look at it, it’s a very aggressive schedule.

last friday, our team started discussing how we’re going handle our piece of the engineering pie. our lead said that each of us would get a slice bigger than usual. he doesn’t expect us to choke, though, because we’re up to the challenge. he continued that for the extra hours that we work, we’d be paid overtime.

i said to myself, what’s new? i’ve already been in overdrive the last few weeks. i’ve been so stressed out lately that even sitting on the john doesn’t give me comfort anymore.

i confess that i’m partly to blame because i haven’t learned how to work smarter. for instance, a couple of weeks ago, i was struggling with this piece of code that was causing the application to self-heal the first time it’s launched. after two days, i was at the point of considering myself an embarrassment to humanity. fortunately, i chanced upon our senior engineer at the water cooler. i mentioned the problem to him.

‘what problem?’ he remarked. ‘self-healing is ok as long as it’s not recurrent. just recompile your code and you’re done.’

in this case, working smarter means sharing your problems with others who could provide you with solutions. but sometimes, when one’s ego comes into play, that’s hard to do.

as much as i enjoy watching the ducks float around the pool, i’m looking forward to the day when they leave in the fall for their winter hideaway. by then, this merger-induced mania would be over. everything would be back to normal again. at least, until the next merger comes along.

Spring is indeed slow coming in this year, but I’ll take it. it means less exposure to allergies. Take care.

i’m susceptible to allergies, too. as the pollen count rises with the temperature. my eyes get watery and i have to sneeze a lot. 😦
