good grief

charlie brown – charles schulz

it happened again today. the angel of death came. another one bit the dust. we were stunned. we thought the layoffs were over, but we were mistaken.

this one shouldn’t have happened, but it did. how do they select who should go and who should remain? do they draw lots? not exactly. those who get the boot are usually folks whose productivity appears to be going downhill. they are referred to as belonging to the bottom 10 percent. with individual performance being measured more closely than ever before, it’s likely that everybody will fall into that group at any given time. after all, it’s humanly impossible to be always at the top of your game. today’s mantra is past accomplishments don’t matter much. it’s what you’ve done lately that counts.

members of our team benefited from the internet boom when salaries skyrocketed. as a result, we’re easy target. management can outsource the jobs elsewhere and pay people much less.

under the current situation, it’s understandable that the stress level within the group should increase. i can see more people using the restroom for temporary relief. you can hear them heave, groan and sigh on their respective seats, although not necessarily in that particular order. i wonder how we would cope when management starts restricting toilet paper use.

there’s no doubt, morale is going down the tube. but can we really blame management? it’s their responsibility to find ways to reduce the cost of doing business.

we must also remember that the role of management is not to make the employees happy but to get the job done and keep productivity up.

‘evolve or die’ is the mantra for next year for those who have kept their heads down and avoid the axe. it’ll definitely be tougher doing more with less people and less people.

sad to say, that’s something we must learn to live with.

As I was reading your entry I thought there were drops of sweat emanating from Charlie Brown’s head, only later did I realize that they were actually snowflakes.

    Very stressful times indeed.
