Bring Me Close

I Could Float
without wings
touch the sky
feel the sunlight
kiss my face
fly through space
if i knew
it would bring me close to you…
people stop and stare
so let them watch me
while i dare
to suddenly dance
through the street
tap my feet
i could sing your name out loud
through the crowd
if i knew
it would bring me close to you
people stop and stare
so let them watch me
while i dare
to suddenly reach
for your hands
hush your lips
steal a kiss or two or three
shamelessly
if i knew
it would bring me close to you
–Mindy Gledhill
Some consider watching the Olympics as a total waste of time. For one thing, the telecast is delayed. This means you get to know the results even before the events are shown. While it gives Bob Costas and company time to think things through and fine-tune their commentaries, it doesn’t bode well for nail biters who thrive on suspense. Bbut the games aren’t the only excuse for watching the Olympics. The ads can be a welcome treat, too.
Take the case of the Fruit of the Loom commercial that features a haunting song from a singer totally unknown to me. After searching the Internet, I found the title to be “Bring Me Close” by Mindy Gledhill.
I was totally taken by this song. The lyrics are very touching and she sings it beautifully. Now I’m facing this dilemma. It’s a hard song to sing and I can’t get it out of my head. Should I take voice lessons to give it justice?
Although the commercial will definitely boost Mindy’s career, it’s deemed by some quarters as selling out to the establishment. I don’t understand why they’re even making it as an issue. Well, it’s about a sexy gymnast in her underwear jumping on the trampoline. But if the ad is done in good taste, why not?
I think Mindy had made the right decision in having her song featured in the ad. She’s such a talented singer. Without the ad, she would have remained anonymous to millions of fans including myself. And that would be very sad for the indie music industry, indeed.
By the way, you can go to the Fruit of the Loom website, www.fruit.com, and download the song for free.Wwhat a deal. Thanks, Mindy.
