bizarro comic strip in the sunday mercury news on 9/5/2010

it seems that the iphone 5 will be available at your favorite store in september. many have been waiting for it with bated breath since 2010 and that includes the creator of the bizarro comic strip. think of it as an early christmas present. it comes on the heels of the recent us court ruling that ordered samsung to pay apple a whopping $1 billion in damages for copyright infringements. what great timing to introduce a new product.

as i see it, there’ll be no stopping apple now in its quest to rule the world. once we have bitten off the forbidden fruit, there’s no escaping from its grasp. our bondage has become absolute.

consider this scenario.

you’re sitting in a restaurant with your date. it’s one of those moments when you feel that everything is right with the world. it’s as if the stars have converged and the planets have aligned. you want to tell her how you feel. you want to tell her how wonderful she looks. but before you cam utter the magic words, you get interrupted by a call. it’s from your buddy telling you about the score in the raiders game that has just ended. when he finally hangs up, you want to continue where you have left off only to find that she’s gone. what could have been a promising evening of lovey-dovey ends in disaster.

what have you done wrong? why would she act so irrationally? well, women aren’t rational in the first place. they are emotional beings. there’s a scientific explanation for that, but i won’t go there at this time. suffice it to say that it was rude of you to take that call. it’s worse than stealing glances at the sexy chick sitting on the next table while she plays with her hair. when you take somebody on a date, it requires that you give her your full undivided attention. but you can’t help it, i suppose. the iphone is a jealous mistress. you have let it take over your life. when it rings, you have to respond right away like a zombie as if it’s a matter of life or death.

i can’t blame you. the iphone and its ilk have become so addictive that you want to be tethered to one 24/7. from its original concept which was to allow you to make and receive calls without a landline, it has morphed into a jack of all trades. it can send and received text. it can play music and movies. it can entertain with games. it can take pictures and videos. it can surf the internet. it can give directions. it can talk and read e-books. in fact, it can do a lot more limited only by your imagination. how about checking your blood pressure? how about booking your next flight? i’m sure there are apps for those, too. it has become so smart that even if it’s stolen, you can’t get away from it. it can still call home and allow you and the police to track its location.

you aren’t alone. the iphone and its ilk have taken over our lives. according to wikipedia, mobile phones in use around the world totaled to over 5.6 billion in 2011 and it’s likely to keep on growing. in the united states, the number of mobile phone in use has even surpassed the total population. it seems that having more phones in your possession has become the new status symbol. it’s an irony that as technology gives you more opportunities to stay connected with those that matter in your life, the more you get disconnected from them. it really pays to talk and touch someone in person. there’s something wrong in the picture when a real smile becomes a 🙂 and a real hugs and kisses a mere xoxo. it’s just not the same.

i don’t know if there’s something in the iphone 5 that will convince me to upgrade. i’m happy with the one i have right now and it’s not even an iphone. but then again, i’m keeping an open mind. i’ll look beyond the hype and see if there’s anything in it for me before i lay the dough on the table

The only thing I like about iphone is the imessage, its like SMS sans the per msg charging to your phone bill. Other than that, wala na. And i hate it that it doesnt have flash player, doesnt play some videos.. There are apps that can convert so you can watch pero ang bagal. Ayun pag meron na ang iphone ng mga yan baka sakali i can consider switching to iphone. 😀

methinks the least feature of the iphone has become the phone. 🙂
