Can Too Much Sleep Be Bad For You?

While beauty experts tout the value of sleep, it could also shorten your life as other stuff that they recommend including diet pills, liposuction, facelift, and anti-aging products.

As I stated in my previous post, sleep can help you lose weight, which is a good thing. But too much of a good thing can also be bad.

There seems to be a correlation between sleeping longer and high mortality rates. In a study conducted by scientists at the University of California, they found that among the million who participated, those who slept eight hours or more died sooner than those who slept less.

Dr. Daniel Kripke, co-author of the study, however, can’t explain why it is so. He said:

We don’t know if long sleep periods lead to death. Additional studies are needed to determine if setting your alarm clock earlier will actually improve your health.

…Individuals who now average six-and-a-half hours of sleep a night can be reassured this is a safe amount of sleep. From a health standpoint there is no reason to sleep longer.

There are many reasons why people oversleep. The main reason is depression as in the case of Rip Van Winkle who’s the current title holder in the Guinness book of records. He went to sleep for 20 years after suffering bouts of depression from his wife’s constant nagging. Another reason is what’s referred to as the ‘sleeping beauty’ syndrome where maidens refuse to wake up unless a prince with sufficient inheritance give them the kiss of the rich and famous. Yet another reason is the discovery of sex. It’s widely known from time immemorial that first time lovers have found it so good that that it’s worth the extra hours or days in bed.

Sleep is essential to both our physical and psychological health. Whether you’re a night person like me or a morning person like somebody else, don’t let anybody tell you how much sleep you need. Sleep all you want. IFf it leads to early death, so be it. You won’t be around to regret it.

Too much of anything can be bad for you. You can even die if you drink too much water.

Loved the reasons why people sleep a lot. Think I’ve slept for all those reasons.
