she’s 14-year old malala yousufzai. she’s got a big heart. it’s as big as the swat valley in pakistan where she lives. nay, it could even be bigger than pakistan itself.

malala has stood up against the taliban and championed the education of girls in the swat valley. the taliban, who have destroyed hundreds of girls’ schools, didn’t like it. they don’t believe that women should be educated. they gave her several warnings to stop her advocacy. she refused.

last tuesday, the militants came to the school and shot her in a van that would take her home. she was hit twice – one in the head and another between the neck and chest. they justified the shooting by saying that her personality has challenged their authority and strict interpretation of shariah laws.

according to the latest news, the surgeons have successfully removed the bullet that entered her head and lodged in her shoulder. while her chance of survival is good, she’s not completely out of the woods yet.

if she survives, the taliban spokesman said, she would be targeted again. it’s not surprising because a girl with a big heart is a threat to everything that they stand for.

will the pakistani people rally behind this 14-year old girl? Will they allow the beating of her big heart to continue and be heard all over the world? the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.
