weekly photo challenge: geometry

i took this picture at the recsk gulag camp in hungary operated in the early 50s during the communist era.

it was erected as a touching tribute to those who were incarcerated and forced to work without compensation and under the most harsh conditions in the nearby quarry. they were comprised of political prisoners, petty criminals, and able-bodied men picked up at random and accused of unsubstantiated charges by the security police. many of these victims remained nameless and disappeared without a trace.

i guess the geometric designs of the memorial can be interpreted many ways. to me it represents the crushing weight of the gulag on the individual robbed of his basic rights. what’s the ball on the top doing there? it must represent a wrecking ball to affirm that never again would this atrocity and affront to human dignity happen again.

It’s terrifying how repeatedly throughout history we give power to those who seek to defile others. I want do desperately for mankind to cease this illogical trend.
