a gif that keeps on giving

a picture is worth a thousand words.

it’s a saying that you must have heard before, coming especially from those who were born to point and shoot.

but it’s so true. a blog without pictures is like reading the kama sutra without illustrations. when everything is left to the imagination, it feels more like your parents teaching you about the birds and the bees. you end up more confused than you were before.

an animated gif or gifs can be considered an upgrade to pictures. if used properly in your blog, they can be effective and make it more attractive. if used improperly, they can make your blog look like a christmas tree from hell.

sure, i had used animated gifs on occasion and i’ll continue to use them in the future. but sorry, it won’t be to advance a political agenda.

one of my most popular posts is about the left brain vs. right brain test. it was from the courier mail in australia featuring a nude dancer in silhouette. when you look at the gif, it moves either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on which side of your brain predominates.

another is about a birthday greeting to a dear friend using fireworks for effect. even though the post didn’t elicit a lot of interest, i was very pleased because it made her happy and that was the most i could hope for.

so, what’s it up to you? if your goal is to have an animated gif that keeps on giving, use it in your blog with caution. when in doubt, don’t even try.

Hey Mike, I like it. You seem to be the first one to fully understand the challenge, but where’s your bio box? Good work and keep it up!

      laurie:

      here’s how to do it:

      1. right click on the gif you want, then select properties
      2. from the properties screen, copy the address (url) and note down the dimension. in my case, it’s
      http://www.mikesfreegifs.com/main4/funny/yawnplay.gif and 468 x 60
      3. use the following code:

      &ltdiv class=”entrytext”&gt&ltdiv class=”entrytext”&gt&ltimg width=”468″ height=”60″ src=”http://www.mikesfreegifs.com/main4/funny/yawnplay.gif”/&gt

      4. before you include the above code in your post, convert all ‘&lt’ and ‘&gt’ to the less than and greater sign symbols respectively

you’re welcome. somehow I can’t put the raw code exactly without wordpress interpreting it as html.

I think the simple and small is fun – but I am making some big anyway – understand why… but I am impressed of yours – Thanks for sharing

I think big or small doesn’t matter as long as it serves the intended purpose. 🙂

The “left brain vs right brain” gif is brilliant. I agree that pictures speaks a thousand words. Great post!

I like pictures in a post. The GIF is great but it takes too much space.

I guess you can put them in a cloud and call them from there. google and Microsoft provide some free space you can use.
