The Mighty Wings Have Fallen

I went to Mcdonald’s for lunch today. After my favorite football team lost in the championship game last Sunday, I thought I deserved a break.

It was 12:30 p.m. The lines were long as usual. They were populated by regulars in various shapes and sizes and that’s all I have to say about that.

I thought of ordering the 5-piece mighty wings before they become history. It seems that they’re not selling as fast as the fastfood chain can make them. The results of its latest promotion have been so dismal that Mcdonald’s have now some 10 million pounds of unwanted frozen chicken wings to offload.

After trying them wings, I have some ideas why they’re not flying high. Putting health issues aside, they’re heavily breaded and a little overcooked. They’re also too spicy for my taste. I understand that this critique isn’t scientific. After all, it’s based on one order of mighty wings. At the same time, I’m one of those who believe that first impressions do last. I don’t think I’d buy this menu item again.

But the big downer must be price that Mcdonald’s is selling them for. The 5-piece mighty wings cost me $4.99. I find it hardly uplifting considering that I could get a whole roasted chicken at my favorite grocery for about the same price.

Mcdonald’s is a smooth operator. I have no doubt that it’ll find creative ways to dispose the 10 million pounds of frozen chicken wings whose takeoff as mighty wings has become a distant possibility. Maybe they will morph as chicken mcnuggets? Who knows? Your guess is as good as mine.
