mr. morris had a workshop where elves labored all night.

“stay away from that tree,” he warned little annie. “resident elves couldn’t be bothered while asleep.”

“yes, grandpa,” she said.

one morning, a robin landed where annie and the family cat were playing. it then flew into the forbidden tree.

“maximus!” annie cried as the cat went after the bird. behind the foliage, a heart-rending yowl followed by silence.

disregarding grandpa’s admonition, annie approached the tree looking for maximus. she was later found dead underneath it.

or so mr. morris thought. amid the commotion, annie woke up from her nap.

I enjoyed the story and I love a happy ending. Maybe the elves were afraid if they killed the man’s granddaughter he’d go and get a chain saw.
