weekly photo challenge: abandoned

location: aguas calientes, peru
machu picchu is one of the seven wonders of the new world.
it’s an ancient site built by the incas in the 15th century and abandoned a century later. it’s located 7,970 feet above sea level in the andes mountains where it remained unperturbed and hidden to outsiders through the centuries until it was discovered by hiram bingham in 1911.
i heard that it would be a rewarding experience to get there on foot, but it comes with a price. it would be a strenuous uphill climb that takes hours or days depending on the route you choose. the best option for many is to take the train, which we did.

i hope you make it there, too. just be prepared for the high altitude where the air is thin. it could make you sick if you don’t take extra precaution.

This is one of my favorite subject matters and you did a nice job of capturing it. You can’t get much more abandoned than Machu Picchu, although I believe it to be much older than the 15th century.
As for me, normally I go after old abandoned farm houses and barns, but this time I decided to do something a little bit different. You’re welcome to come and see my take on the matter. ๐

in a national geographic article, brian bauer, an expert in andean civilization was quoted as saying the machu picchu was built around 1450, but nobody really knows for sure.

I get that. Thanks. I also agree with your last phrase: nobody really knows for sure. We only assume carbon dating is correct, although there are some who do not believe it is. Also, one assumes that the carbon in the air has always been the same as it is today, while I don’t think it has been. Geology seems to be based on the premise that everything exists today pretty much as it did millions of years ago, atmospheric-wise. ๐

facts and theories have been debunked time and time again. remember the fact that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it? at the end of the day, it all boils down to who’s talking and whether you’re inclined to believe him or not.

Well said. And one’s willingness to believe or not depends highly one what he already believes or doesn’t believe. Which is why I find “science” so-called so infuriating. If it doesn’t fit inside the box, it’s either impossible or ridiculous. These days, you have to have more than an apple dropping on your head, or wherever, in order to get through the thick skulls of today’s “scientists,” especially the older, more fixated ones.
