Weekly Photo Challenge: Shadowed

Je Suis Charlie!
For this week’s challenge, I thought of sharing a picture of the Eiffel Tower as a tribute to the 12 victims of the recent Charlie Hebdo attack. It was taken by a pocket digital camera on our last night in Paris in the summer of 2013.
After dinner, we walked back to the hotel and stopped by a spot where we had a good view of the famous symbol of the city. From the distance, it was a sight to behold even in low light conditions.
Gazing at the Eiffel Tower, we held our glasses of champagne high and gave each other a toast for the wonderful time we had in Paris.
As a result of the Charlie Hebdo Massacre, the lights of the tower were dimmed. But make no mistake about it; it wasn’t to appease the Islamic extremists now dead who tried to put Paris back into the dark ages. It was rather to mourn for those who paid the ultimate price for upholding the right to freely express one’s ideas and opinions.
Paris, which is often referred to as the city of light, couldn’t be easily cowed and intimidated. After all, it was the birthplace of the age of enlightenment that ushered the intellectual and scientific movement in the 18th century.

It is really sad when violence is thought to be the answer for so many things. The tower looks so beautiful.

I was in Paris this past April and the violence France has experienced this week, heartbreaking. Your post was a beautiful and thoughtful tribute to those whose lives were lost. Thank you.
