a day in the life

my neighborhood

the storm system dubbed the pineapple express promised to soak california real bad and it didn’t disappoint. starting friday night, it brought heavy rains that knocked out power lines and caused flooding and mudslides. under the circumstances, the weekend was shot. there was really nothing much you could do.

it was gloomy and there was dampness in the air when i walked to the public library this saturday morning. it was one mile and a half away from where i live. i was sure glad i had my rain jacket on as it started to drizzle while i was on the way. when it turned to heavy downpour, i found shelter in a liquor store.

it must be fate that brought me there. inside the store, i saw the powerball jackpot had reached $394 million. it would be stupid not to take my chances, so i bought 10 lottery tickets.

when the rain eased a bit, i continued my walk. i didn’t mind getting wet. after weeks without rain in what supposed to be the wettest period of the year, i considered it a blessing. i said to myself, bring it on. california is in its fourth year of drought. we need all the rain we could get.

at the library, i found the usual folks. there were the regular readers of newspapers, magazines, and books. there were the folks using the public computers to access their e-mail accounts and surf the internet. there were the movie aficionados looking for movies to borrow. there were the high school students doing their research and homework. lastly, there were the grade school-age kids dropped off by their parents who consider the library as a day care facility.

although the library was a little crowded, i was happy to find my favorite seat still unoccupied in the corner by the window. i was therefore able to read today’s paper in peace.

farmers market

on the way back home, i saw the sky started to clear and the rain had stopped momentarily. i went to the local farmers’ market, but there was nothing much activity going on. as could be expected in this kind of weather, many of the vendors and shoppers were no-shows.

bird in parking log

even this poor bird was hesitant to go.

later in the evening, the lottery results were announced. i learned that i won $7 and that nobody won the jackpot bringing the grand prize to $450 million. it means all hope was not lost. i could play again another day.

the current storm system is expected to last until monday only, so next weekend will be awesome with blue skies and warmer temperature. haha. who knows? i may even be a lottery millionaire by then.
