Three Quote Challenge: Day 2

Bob Is Dood
Location: On the road to Bruges, Belgium

I was quite surprised that GaH Learner (not her real name) had nominated me for the Three Quote Challenge which is making a lot of buzz on the internet lately.

I confess it didn’t feel like winning in the lotto, but it did get my attention just the same. To start, of all people, why me? Consider the odds. There are million of bloggers out there who are more deserving.

Hmmmm… her blog is called Flights of Fancy. But I digress.

Please visit her blog to find out what you’ve been missing. It’s an interesting read, most especially if you’re into science fiction. I promise it won’t make you fall asleep. If I may suggest, go to her about page first to give you an idea on what she’s up to.

The Three Quote Challenge.

These are the rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Post one fresh quotation on three consecutive days.
  • On each of the three days, nominate three folks who have not yet taken part to continue the challenge.

As with many challenges, the rules can be bent a little, if need be, to fit in with people’s blogging schedules. Some bloggers have posted all three quotes in one day rather than three days. Others have posted them over three weeks’ time. It’s really up to the individual how s/he completes the challenge.

For my Day 2 challenge, I share the following for its social advocacy and impact on saving lives:

Bob is dood?

It’s from a sign that caught my attention on the way to Bruges, Belgium. It has made me wonder who this Bob is and what the phrase means. Further research has revealed that it’s part of a campaign against drinking and driving by the Belgian Road Safety Institute. It translates to: “Bob is dead?”

“Bob” represents a person who sets a good example by not driving under the influence of alcohol.

The campaign, introduced by the Belgian government in 1995, has become so successful that it has been adopted by other countries. In the Netherlands, for example, it has morphed from a person into an acronym for “Bewust Onbeschonken Bestuurder” meaning ““Consciously Non-Drunk Driver.”

What I like about it is that it’s clever, its message subtle but very effective.

Finally, I’m supposed to nominate 3 people for this challenge. Darn, I can’t bear the thought of putting someone on the spot and add to his or her stress level at this time. Any volunteers? Just say the word.

I would never have learned about the Bob campaign if I hadn’t nominated you. 😀 Sometimes being a nuisance pays. 😉
