From where she stood, Abby could see clear blue sky and boats anchored safely in the harbor.
It was a perfect day to release Petya, the name she gave to the seagull, that she nursed back to health. A month ago while taking a walk along the beach and enjoying the view, Abby found the injured bird shot with a pellet gun.
Freed from its metal cage, Petya hesitated for a moment and looked at Abby as if asking for her permission. But sensing the wind, it finally spread its wings and soared to the heavens to reclaim its birthright.

That’s nice! If Abby would like any more gulls, we have a bit of a problem with them in my part of the country. There’s one tapping its beak on my window right now! Shoo, go away!

when i was a kid, i let go of my pet bird. the hesitating bit came from the memory of seeing it wavering before flying away.

Sweet story, but honestly I kept expecting her to get shot again. Even nature can be cruel. I saw a story where this group had rescued an injured seal and nursed it back to health. Upon release, it swam out about 50 yards and a killer whale gobbled it up. No happy ending there (unless you’re the Orca).
