Belogradchik Fortress

Location: Belogradchik, Bulgaria
Last October, I joined a group to visit the Belogradchik Fortress located on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria.

It was on a cold and windy day. When I reached the top, I was freezing all over. It wasn’t because of the weather. It was because I was wearing a fleece jacket not warm enough for the occasion. Like they say, there’s no bad weather, only bad outfit.

The original fortress was built by the ancient Romans during their occupation of the region. Its location makes it unique. It’s surrounded by natural rocks that began to take shape more than 230 million years ago. Made largely of limestone, these rocks form a strip over a mile wide, more than 18 miles long and up to 650 feet high.

Our tour guide said each rock formation bears a name along with a story behind it based on its shape, such as The School Girl, Adam and Eve, The Bear, The Madonna, etc. Well, it might take a little imagination to sort it out. At least to me, anyway.
