For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 7 June 2019
This is a delicate subject that I hope I had handled properly. Please accept my apologies if you find it offensive

Brian was sixteen when his dad died. Never a day passed that he didn’t see his stepmom crying.
Coming home from school, Brian found her playing the old man’s music. She took his hand and led him to dance.
“Oh, Randy,” she moaned his dad’s name, hugged him tight and kissed him on the mouth. Caught by surprise, bewildered and confused, he kissed her back. One thing led to another until the point of no return was reached.
“Forget that it ever happened,” his stepmom said while lighting a cigarette.
It was a secret that he’d carry to his grave.

In my perfect world, also known as the bubble, this cannot and will not happen. I read it and felt disgusted. If this was the intention, then well done. 🙂

taboo was the first thing that came to my mind when i saw the picture prompt with its closed door and windows. i just let my mind go wild after that. 🙂

I’m not sure it’s possible to explore this in 100 words. We’d need to know more about what was going on for both both mother and son

i agree the 100-word limit can be a curse sometimes. with many details missing, the readers are left with many questions unanswered.

It is always uncomfortable when someone is taken advantage of. But perhaps the mutual grief allows for a measure of forgiveness.

A moment of giving in to impulse can generate a lifetime of torment. Maybe she could just forget, but he was messed up for life because of it. I don’t blame her because she is lost in her grief. That’s how these very unfortunate things can happen. Also, thank you for the warning ahead of time of the sensitive subject matter.

You show her grief and loss very powerfully in the extremity of her actions. And the son’s inability to deal with the situation also comes through strongly. Your story creates sympathy for them both.

I think you handled that difficult subject with sensitivity. You made it believable, and you showed the incest as a consequence of passionate grief at the loss of a husband/father.
However, taboo subjects are taboo for a reason – they have the potential to badly upset others. By that, I certainly don’t mean we shouldn’t write about them and publish the stories on forums like FF, but – and this is purely a personal view – I would think very hard before I did.
Of course, you probably did think carefully, in which case my comment is unnecessary. I hope you don’t find it patronising. And thank you for the warning up-front that your story deals with a delicate subject.

A good story and well written, Plaridel. The stepmother had better hope the boy keeps quiet and doesn’t tell anyone as he’s only sixteen and she would be charged with child molestation and go to prison. Somehow, he should get away from her as both of them need help and she’s not to be trusted in the same house with him. He has the rest of his life to live and could have serious problems for years. I’m a realist and this type of thing probably happens oftener than most of us would like to think. —- Suzanne
