Reuben had decided to cut his vacation short. He was terribly missing someone back home.

“I heard that you’re leaving this weekend,” Elena said while they were having ice cream at Swensen’s. After meeting at a local dance, she started having romantic feelings towards him.

“Darn, I guess somebody beat me to it. I meant to tell you today.”

“You must be getting bored of this sleepy little town.”

“Not at all. On the contrary, I have enjoyed my stay.”

“Is someone waiting for you, a special girl perhaps?” she asked, her voice quivering.

“Yes, but it’s a boy actually.”

Love doesn’t care about anything as trivial as gender

Perhaps the boy is a son? Although it could be a lover. Depends on the reading. Nice job!
