Ryan thought it was time to take their friendship to the next level, but Sabina refused.

They met on the first day of school. The moment he laid eyes on her he was hooked. She stood out dressed modestly and wearing a hijab.

In spite of the cultural differences, they became fast friends sharing their love of Shakespeare and the classics.

“I’m sorry, Sabina said, “but it’s going against our family tradition.”

The rejection hit him hard. But he wasn’t one to walk away. He was determined to help her break free from the shadow of outdated beliefs and practices.

If he writes her culture off as outdated beliefs and practices, he may not get far with her

    • 2. plaridel  |  November 18, 2020 at 1:16 pm

it’s wishful thinking on his part.

  • 3. Iain Kelly  |  November 18, 2020 at 11:53 am

I fear he has an uphill battle, unless she is willing to give up her family for him!

    • 4. plaridel  |  November 18, 2020 at 1:16 pm

it’s likely the odds are against him.

reminds me of the poem, “east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet.”

Sounds like he’s a committed individual and knows love is worth that commitment. I hope things work out between them.

like they say, it takes two to tango.

he needs all the help he could get.

  • 11. draliman  |  November 18, 2020 at 10:24 pm

Thinking of her beliefs as “outdated” probably isn’t the best start for him. Maybe she feels the same about it though.

    • 12. plaridel  |  November 19, 2020 at 8:47 am

he still needs some growing up to do.

  • 13. Sandra  |  November 19, 2020 at 3:54 am

    • 14. plaridel  |  November 19, 2020 at 8:46 am

  • 15. Keith's Ramblings  |  November 19, 2020 at 9:35 am

Such a shame that cultural differences stood in way of a relationship that was meant to be.

    My yarn!

I wonder if he’ll succeed? Somehow I doubt it. Inventive take on the photo prompt.

the photo prompt made me imagine the dark shadow of the past looming over the present.

    Dear Plaridel,

A lot will depend on how dedicated she is to her culture vs how much she cares for Ryan.

      only time will tell.

Dangerous territory for besotted love. At least she understands the pitfalls of their predicament.

    • 22. plaridel  |  November 20, 2020 at 9:10 am

he can try to force the issue by kidnapping her. i just don’t know if it will work or not.

  • 23. granonine  |  November 20, 2020 at 4:24 am

Wow. This situation could end very poorly for them both. He needs to keep in mind that in her world, their practices are not outdate. She needs to remember what can happen to women in her culture who step outside the lines.

    • 24. plaridel  |  November 20, 2020 at 9:09 am

i think she’s aware of the consequences. there’s no ifs or buts.

  • 25. Liz Young  |  November 20, 2020 at 2:15 pm

She has to want to leave all that behind if he’s to have any chance.

    • 26. plaridel  |  November 21, 2020 at 11:12 pm

      which is unlikely.

  • 27. Brenda's Thoughts  |  November 20, 2020 at 5:55 pm

He has picked a tough battle, but hopefully with love and sensitivity he can win her heart. But, life is not always that simple. Nicely done, Plaridel.

    • 28. plaridel  |  November 21, 2020 at 11:12 pm

it would be like winning the lotto.

  • 29. Tannille  |  November 20, 2020 at 8:25 pm

He’s setting himself up for heartache. Might work if he converted but his attitude suggests other wise. Well done.

    • 30. plaridel  |  November 21, 2020 at 11:12 pm

sadly, in some tradition, it’s the parents who do the matchmaking.

  • 31. notestowomen  |  November 21, 2020 at 4:07 pm

He’s setting himself up for a big disappointment.

    • 32. plaridel  |  November 21, 2020 at 11:11 pm

like they say, better to have loved and lost than not to love at all.

  • 33. michaelwynnauthor  |  November 23, 2020 at 5:55 am

That’s a tough task he’s set himself but perhaps love will conquer all

      hope springs eternal. πŸ™‚

Honestly, and many may not like my opinion, but the guy sounds like a quack. He wants to define her according to his idea of what is modern, what is a woman and who she should be to his tastes. I champion her for sticking to her beliefs and I hope she dumps him as friend too for not respecting her as a person, and her ability to choose for herself. Many Muslim women do choose to practice their faith out of conviction, and not out of obligation or family pressure.

    • 36. plaridel  |  November 24, 2020 at 6:48 pm

well said. and if i may add, if he really loves her, he’d let her be.

  • 39. Spirituality Awakening  |  April 4, 2021 at 5:35 am
