On a dare, Hazel climbed the maple tree. Half way up, she lost her balance and fell down. Cutting the tree wasn’t much consolation for a young woman who became a paraplegic.

Through it all, Brian stood by her.

“I think you should go,” she said.

“But I want to stay.”

“What for?”

“I want to take care of you.”

“You’re out of your freakin’ mind. Why do you want to be with somebody in a wheelchair?”

“Just go and never look back.”

A year later, Hazel died of Covid-19.

Never a day passed that Brian didn’t mourn her passing.

As children we never gave a second thought to climbing up trees. It is sad when the fun is spoilt the hard way.

Wow that’s really said. These medical issues, take time to adjust. She still could have had a great life. Not much you cant do in a chair these days.

unfortunately, she wasn’t able to go through the 5 stages of grief, the last of which, was acceptance.

Such a sad story. I can understand that someone injured so badly would need time and be angry at the world for some time. Sadly, Hazel didn’t have time enough to relearn the value of the life she still had. You really are an expert at pulling the heartstrings, Plaridel.
