“Should I buy a new one?” I asked Sam when I brought my car to his garage for routine maintenance.

“Does it still take you where you want to go like driving your mom to her medical appointments?”

“Yes.”

“Then there’s no need. Besides, I’m here to make sure it last for years.”

“But what about the noise I keep hearing under the hood?”

“That’s nothing. It’s an old car. It’s something you have to live with.”

“Ah.”

“What you need is a new set of tires. It’s your lucky day. It’s on sale right now.”

“Thanks, Sam, you’re heaven-sent.”

Of course, if he was a mechanic instead of a tire salesman, the pitch would be totally different!

We can all use a Sam in our lives. Good one.

This is the kind of mechanic I like. We usually drive our cars until they completely break down and mechanics like Sam make that possible. So he makes a profit selling tyres. Good for him.

My husband has always maintained our vehicles, so I’ve never had to rely on a mechanic. Lots of good ones out there, but it would be just my luck to run into Sly Sam.

I love the way you hint at Sam’s slippery behaviour. Much of what he said was truthful – until he came to the tires where he had some he wanted to sell. Oh, slippery, slippery Sam!

My experience with mechanics tells me Sam will find an excuse to sell new tires even on a new car! Amazing what a “friendly” mechanic can convince you of. Good story, Plaridel.
