Laila was staring through the window like a miserable puppy. Her step mom punished her after half-sister Mia complained that she ate her Halloween candies. Laila saw her dad did it, too, but she didn’t say a word. Only the thought of monsters lurking behind the trees prevented her from running away.

As dusk settled in, her dad interceded on Laila’s behalf. After asking his wife’s permission, he opened the door and let his favorite daughter in.

“Thank you for not being a tattle-tale,” he said. “I owe you.”

“You owe me big time, Dad, I can’t wait for Christmas.“

Seems like Laila is saving the moment for a future opportunity to extract a favour from Dad. What will she want?

I got stuck on the “favorite daughter” part. Mom locked her favorite out of the house? That seems a bit severe. Seems the younger sister was more favored.

    Dear Plaridel,

Laila knows her dad, doesn’t she? Dysfunctional family for sure.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

PS Should it be “his favorite daughter”?

Complicity with fathers, especially when a girl is heaven ! Us sisters would side with him to chide mother’s too serious “mummy face” when our behaviour was out of line.
