He was a computer nerd. She was a popular cheerleader.

Believing that opposites attract, he decided to make a bold move. The junior prom was just around the corner, so he asked her to be his date. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.

“Are you kidding me?” she said laughing. “Get over yourself.”

It was a smack down that hurt him to the core. But in a kind of twisted way, it would also make him more resilient and better equipped to handle future setbacks.

With his self-esteem in ruins, he went home to Mama for some tender loving care.

He can do better than that arrogant lady. Hopefully he’ll not stick around Mum for too long though.

Nice texture to this one, Plaridel. Those wounds heal often stronger than the original. For the moment, Mom’s soothing will help. I agree with Gabi, Mom has to be careful not to commisserate too much with him or he’ll never cut the apron strings. I think about that Pink Floyd song, “Mother” and it is so true!

Young people can be so arrogantly cruel. Hopefully, Mom will get him back on the right track and send him back out into the world of dicey situations for, through those, we learn.

As a mom, this resonated with me. I have soothed a few broken hearted sons in my life.

    Dear Plaridel,

It’s such a tender age for boys as well as girls. You wrote it well.

    Shalom,

Oh dear. As a high school English teacher, I watched situations like this, and my inclination was to go “mother” the boy or girl who was refused. But that wasn’t my job. The good news is that often, the nerd blossomed later on and had more dates than he ever dreamed of πŸ™‚
