For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 28 April 2023

The floating restaurant reminded him of the time his family fled Vietnam. It was a far cry from the overcrowded boat they used for their escape.

Looking back, it was amazing how they survived and ultimately found a new home in the U.S.

Suddenly, Trung heard his girlfriend’s voice.

“You seem lost in thought,” Kelsey said. “What’s on your mind?”

Should he tell her about the starvation, pirate attacks, bad weather, and rough seas they endured during that dangerous journey? Absolutely not.

“I’m just wondering what I should order on the menu.”

“Choose wisely,” she advised. “You’re footing the bill.”

Trauma is terrible. It lingers long after the event.

It would spoil the mood of the evening some what. Better to save that conversation for another time.

A white lie for now, but if things go well perhaps he can invite her in in his own time.

Very sad. That kind of trauma rarely ever fully heals. If they grow closer, he should tell her. It’s an important part of his story.

thanks for this, some traumas are sometimes best kept for oneself. Not the time or place.

    Dear Plaridel,

Perhaps not now, but, if she’s the one, he should share his past with her. Well done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I see a couple of flags rising in the story. One is that he is reluctant for some reason to share his origin story with his date. Another is that his date may not be the kind of person he would want to share his origin story with. Nice texture here, Plaridel.

I remember that time, with the Vietnamese being called ‘boat people’. Yep, don’t tell her it may spoil the day.
