i was wrong and glad i was

argentine cardinal jorge mario bergoglio is the new pope. a seagull acted as the harbinger of good news. it sat on top of the chimney and flew away just before the white smoke emerged announcing his election. he chose the name francis, the first pope to be called by that name.

darn, i thought it would be cardinal tarcisio pietro evasio bertone. do i have to eat my shorts now? have mercy on me.

the election to the successor of pope benedict xvi didn’t last longer than i expected. i was thinking it would take at least around st. patrick’s day. what this means is that a front-runner among the cardinals had already been established even before the first vote was cast. it took just four more votes to get him elected.

and the next pope is…

on the eve of the papal conclave convening to elect the successor to pope benedict xvi, it’s still anybody’s guess. although some names come up in the press, nobody emerges as the clear front-runner.

i read that some odd makers have taken bets on who it will be by treating the favored cardinals like race thoroughbreds. is it in bad taste or not? i leave it to the bettors to decide.

at the same time, i don’t think i’d be crossing the line of decency by telling you to whom i’m putting my bets on. after all, everybody is entitled to his own opinion. if i were proven wrong, it’s no big deal. i wouldn’t be losing money. i may just have to eat my shorts, that’s all.
