Kids Crossing the Street

Location: Bucharest, Romania

Last October, I was in Bucharest, Romania. Since the end of 42 years of Communist rule and the execution of Communist Party General Secretary Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena in 1989, I’ve found a country on the road to full recovery and people more optimistic about the future. Of course, a short visit doesn’t make one an expert, but I want to believe. I really want to believe as kids crossing the street feel comfortable and safe.

I dwell in Possibility –
A fairer House than Prose –
More numerous of Windows –
Superior – for Doors –

Of Chambers as the Cedars –
Impregnable of eye –
And for an everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky –

Of Visitors – the fairest –
For Occupation – This –
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise –

– Emily Dickinson
