The 12th Annual Castro Valley Car Show

Car Show
Location: Castro Valley, California

It’s Saturday in Castro Valley, an unincorporated town in Northern California known as the birthplace of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. Nothing much happens here, but when it does, it’s something special.

If you live in the area, the 12th Annual Castro Valley Car Show is worth your while. It’s held downtown today featuring classic, specialty, and exotic cars along with vendor booths and live music to entertain the crowd.

According to its sponsor, the Hayward-Castro Valley Moose Lodge 1491, the goal is to provide a community event that will engage our residents, highlight our local businesses, attract car enthusiasts near and far, and support local youth and community organizations.

As I write this, it’s almost closing time. I consider it as a big success and glad to be part of it. I look forward to next year.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Favorite Place

Lake Chabot
Location: Castro Valley, California

There’s more to our quiet, tree-covered town nestled in the valley that meet the eye. Its charms remain hidden because it’s referred to as a bedroom community where most people live to sleep and commute to work elsewhere.

Whenever I feel the need to unwind, I go to the nearby regional park about 45-minutes walk from my place.

Lake Chabot

It has a man-made lake where fishing and non-motorized boating are allowed. Built in the 1870s, the lake covers 317 acres. I find hiking around the lake very peaceful and relaxing with birds singing along the way. The length is about nine miles, but it’s all worth it.

It’s as close to nature as you can get, but don’t let its serene beauty lulls you into a false sense of security. Be ever mindful of the sign “Beware of Mountain Lions.”

I’ve been told that lions are shy of people and that they usually hunt at night. But in the event that you encounter one, you should heed the following advice: (1) Do not attempt to run; (2) Do not turn your back; and (3) Try to appear as big as you can be to scare the lion.

The 5,067-acre park also provides picnic areas with barbecue pits, a grassy field area for sport activities, and facilities for group camping and backpacking with advanced reservations required.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beloved

A Walk to Remember the Park

Location: Lake Chabot Park, Castro Valley, California
I chanced upon this couple in their 70s holding hands while walking in the park. Although I consider it intrusive to take pictures of people without their permission, it was such a lovely sight that I had to make an exception.

I find it admirable to see two people grow old together and enjoying each other’s company. They’re living proof that a marriage can last “until death do us part.”

A successful relationship will always be a work in progress. It requires shared commitment and mutual respect in facing life’s challenges that come along the way. It gets easier when a beloved partner is on your side.

a trusted volume
that doesn’t stay languid
on the shelf and gather dust
that’s you, beloved

read cover to cover
i’d known you by heart
still, when i part the pages
you’d come fresh, the fireworks start

a companion on long hikes
and a pillow on my head
as i lay down on the grass to rest
that’s you, beloved

Weekly Photo Challenge: It’s Not This Time of Year Without…

Autumn Leaves
location: San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California

Free Falling

can’t stop the leaves from falling
nature has the final say
even on a fair autumn morning
the wind blows them all away

brown, red, yellow, or green
their color doesn’t matter
on these grounds where they now lay
they are dead, they breathe no longer

the tree made leafless looks grim
branches pointing up to heaven
once again, it would need a trim
for next spring, so says the raven
