Weekly Photo Challenge: Jubilation

Inca Girl
Location: Cusco, Peru

Jubilation can be manifested in many ways.

In the case of the little girl waiting for the start of the parade in Cusco, Peru, the reaction was more restrained.

An unexpected gift of orange didn’t cause her to jump up and down.

But the look in her eyes and the way she held the fruit close to her mouth betrayed the emotions welling up deep inside her.

Ha Ha. I found it not only cute and funny but also reminded me of a similar situation when I was her age.

After her mother gestured to her as if it were a forbidden fruit, she handed it to her for safekeeping.

Needless to say, I lost tract of the little girl as the parade went on.

But there was something I did know. She enjoyed the taste of that orange much more because she held on to it a little bit longer.

dear one, as long as we live in hope, we will endure.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

while waiting for the annual independence day parade to start, i noticed this girl dressed in a native custom.

she had a faraway look in her eyes, holding a fruit close to her mouth, getting a taste of what would be a special treat.

it was a moment in time that i simply couldn’t let pass. it reminded me of my childhood, full of anticipation and hope for the future.

i immediately snapped her picture before i lost her amidst the surging tide of humanity engulfing the downtown parade route.

it may just be a piece of rock or a simple souvenir. it may not mean much to most people. but don’t tell that to the person who has picked it up from the beach or bought it from the shop. to that person, it could be somethimg to be cherished, representing a moment in time shared with a special someone.

it’s sentiment that gives a memento its value. it’s the emotional connection that later turns it into a treasure.
