Disneyland was the last trip our family had together. It was before dad’s deployment in Vietnam that would change our lives forever.

I remembered savoring each attraction and exhilarating ride with dad until it was time to go.

It was my first lesson on happiness. It never lasted. The happiness that the park provided during our stay was equal only to the sadness I felt when it was over.

If there was any consolation, it was that the sadness didn’t last as well. Being a kid, it wasn’t that hard to find happiness again. But growing up was another story.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Magic

Disneyland, USA
location: Anaheim, California

Every kid dreams of going to Disneyland. And when they do get the chance, the event is captured in pictures and videos for a lifetime of happy memories.

As far as I’m concerned, you can call me a late bloomer. It’s a place I’d never been until I was an adult. But it didn’t matter anyway. I felt the magic. It made me feel like a kid again.

My favorite event on that first visit was the Electrical Light Parade held along Main Street featuring floats and live performers covered in thousands of electronically controlled lights. After hours of walking around the park on a hot summer day and standing in line at the rides, it was a welcomed treat. It provided a moment to unwind, relax, and gather one’s bearings before calling it a night.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fun!

Disneyland Characters
Location: Disneyland, Anaheim, California

Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. You never outgrow it. It provides fun for all regardless of age. I say it as I really mean it and not from somebody who want to take you for a ride.

Take the case of my mother who is way, way past the retirement age. When she came to see me from the Philippines, I took her to Disneyland. It was a six-hour drive from the San Francisco bay area where I live, but it was all worth it.

She caught the magic. She even had her picture taken with the Disney characters roaming around. It was a joy to see her living in the moment and having fun after my father passed away.

Disneyland is where happy memories are made. I’m sure my mother had a great time and the memories of her visit would remain with her (and me) for a long time.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Pure

Location: Disneyland Park, Anaheim, California

On a hot summer day, playing around ground spouts is pure joy. Every drop of water can provide relief from the unrelenting heat. Darn, it’s moments like this that one wishes to be a kid again.
