During a visit to Bulgaria, it was a delight to bear witness to the country’s growing interest in reviving ethnic and traditional folk dancing.

One evening, we received an invitation to watch the dress rehearsal of a Bulgarian folk dance ensemble in Gorna Oryahovitsa, a town 140 miles from the capital of Sofia, in Northern Bulgaria.

Although there were only 14 of us in the audience, all from the United States, they treated us with a great performance. It was a night to remember and one of the highlights of the trip.

Every Woman Is Beautiful

CariƱosa, shown in the video above, is my favorite Philippine folk dance. It’s one that, I think, showcases real courtship. Ha ha. First, the guy pursues the girl, then the girl pursues the guy, and, finally, everything falls into place.

I have travelled in a lot places. One thing I have learned is that every woman, irrespective of nationality, is beautiful, and there’s no better way to see it than when she performs her country’s native dance. As she sways to the rhythm of the music, she blossoms before our eyes. With every moves she makes, she leads us to the secret of her charms.
