Paella
Location: Bayeux, Normandy, France

Paella

While visiting Normandy, we stayed in the historic town of Bayeux which was spared from the destruction following the D-Day invasion in World War II.

For every tourist who has passed this way, it’s a must to see the famous Bayeux tapestry featuring a 230-feet-long embroidered art that chronicles William the Conqueror’s victory over King Harold of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

It’s all fine and dandy to dwell on the past visiting the 11th-century tapestry as well as the other attractions such as the 13th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, War Cemetery and Museums. But at some point, you need to go back to the present to augment your cultural experience. One way to do that is to meet people and indulge in local food.

Paella Food Stand

It was Market Day on our second day in Bayeux. The parking lot next to our hotel had been converted into a bustling market. Amid the stalls offering cheese, wine, fresh fruit and other produce, there arose the aroma of paellas being cooked in large stoves. I couldn’t help but trace its location. After taking its picture for posterity, I immediately got a taste of it. It was something to die for (no pun intended) with all the meat and fatty goodness.
