While in Hungary, we visited a middle school in Recsk. Since it was a holiday, we didn’t get to meet any students. One of the senior teachers, however, was gracious enough to play host. She ushered us into the room where she’s teaching English and made us sit on her students’ desks.

She gave an orientation on Hungary’s school system. I remember her saying that, in middle school, every student is required to learn a foreign language. Most students pick English because of their interest in pop music. In college, every student must learn two foreign languages and pass the proficiency test on both languages before he can graduate. She said that adding foreign languages to the curriculum give the students an advantage in dealing with the outside world.
We had lunch at the school cafeteria where we were served what students normally eat.
I had fried chicken which looked eeringly familiar. It was like my favorite chicken at Mcdonald’s without the bun. There was no surprise there. McDonald’s is one of the school’s biggest donors.
