Weekly Photo Challenge: Smile

Budapest Store
Location: Budapest, Hungary

I Came to buy a smile—today—
But just a single smile—
The smallest one upon your face
Will suit me just as well—
The one that no one else would miss
It shone so very small—
I’m pleading at the “counter”—sir—
Could you afford to sell—
I’ve Diamonds—on my fingers—
You know what Diamonds are?
I’ve Rubies—live the Evening Blood—
And Topaz—like the star!
‘Twould be “a Bargain” for a Jew!
Say—may I have it—Sir?

Shoes Memorial

Location: Budapest, Hungary
Along the east bank of the Danube river, there lies a memorial composed of different sizes and styles of weathered period shoes. Cast out of iron, the 60 pairs were meant to depict the shoes that the men, women, and children left behind on the bank after they were killed by the Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest in 1944-45. Shot at close range at the edges of the Danube, their bodies fell into the river and carried away by the currents.

In my travels, it’s one of the most touching memorials that I’d visited. Looking at the shoes, it’s not difficult to imagine the pain and the loss that the victims and survivors of this brutality had to endure.

Weekly Photo Challenge: 2017 Favorites

Location: Budapest, Hungary
After enjoying a hearty meal of goulash, I took a walk around one of Budapest’s shopping centers to burn off the extra calories. It was at that time that I noticed a group of men hoisting and putting up a sign across the street. It said “Budapest” in big letters.

Call me weird, but it was a sight I couldn’t ignore. The chance of it ever happening again was almost nil in this lifetime. It would be like winning in the lotto. Without hesitation, I pulled my pocket camera and took it for posterity.

Looking back, I consider it as one of my favorite photos this year.

Fat Policeman

Location: Budapest, Hungary
He stands along Budapest’s Zrínyi Street close to St. Stephen’s Basilica.

I confess I missed him on my first visit to Budapest. But last month, I finally met him.

He’s referred to as the Fat Policeman with a round belly.

In other countries, he’d symbolize a cop who indulges in corruption and abuse of authority for personal gain.

In Budapest, however, he represents a love for hearty Hungarian cuisine such as the goulash, which has become one of my favorites.

It’s said that rubbing his belly can bring good luck, especially in love. Small wonder that it has become shiny from all the rubbing from tourists and passers-by.
