The grilled fish on the stick was staring at me as if to say, “Come and get me.” It certainly looked like a winner that would appeal to those who were open to experience exotic food.
I do confess I almost gave in to the temptation, but the day was young and I was still hungry for more offerings that lay ahead.
The Tsukiji Market, Chūō, Tokyo, Japan is a must-visit for foodies. It’s filled with more than a hundred shops and restaurants and stands selling ready-made local food.
Navigating this narrow, covered street stretching five blocks provided an opportunity to see and try some of the goodies on display. Some vendors even gave out samples to taste and enjoy.
Truth to tell, after all the freebies, I didn’t have room for the grilled fish anymore. Perhaps on my next visit whenever that might be.

Okonomiyaki is a popular street food all over Japan. Its name was derived from combining the Japanese word okonomi (preference) and yaki (cooked).

I had my first Okonomiyaki while walking around the Shibuya district in Tokyo. I didn’t get to choose which ingredients I liked. I just went in for the ride. As far as I could tell, it came with eggs, cabbage, noodles, and unknown meat. Maybe I was just hungry, but it tasted very good.
Okonomiyaki reminds me of omelette or pancake as it’s cooked in a similar fashion. It’s said that toppings and batters tend to vary according to the region.
