Living on the Streets

For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 16 October 2020

From the way he dressed in a nifty school uniform, nobody would have would have guessed he was homeless.

Dylan and his dad had been living on the streets managing to eke out a living by washing boats and doing menial chores at the marina. It was a hard existence. They were often ignored and didn’t exist to those who walked past them.

His dad had encouraged him to get an education for a better future.

The streets didn’t have walls. It didn’t provide roof over their heads. But for now it was home as long as they were together.

When Prudence Was the Better Part of Valor

It was one hot summer night when we drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles to attend the wedding of our mutual friend. There were four of us in the car.

At around 2 a.m. we stopped at a diner along Interstate 5 to get a bite and take the much needed restroom break.

We found the place almost empty. While waiting to be seated, a guy stood beside one of my friends and started picking on him. He was a Latino of medium built and blood shot eyes. He seemed to be intoxicated or high on drugs.
