Wherever you travel, the destination is the ultimate goal. But the journey that takes you there can be rewarding as well. It can offer a lot of opportunities to spice up the total experience.
As a case in point, I remember our trip to Machu Picchu in Peru. On the way, we stopped along the roadside to interact with the locals and marvel at the assortment of colorful souvenirs that they were selling. It proved to be a good introduction to the Incans who built the famous site in the 15th century.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Solitude
![]() |
Location: Machu Picchu, Peru
No man is an island, according to John Donne. It’s true, indeed. We are social animals as attested by the popularity of Facebook. At the same time, there are times when the situation gets so overwhelming that we feel the need to disconnect momentarily from the rest of humanity. We go into solitude mode.
During a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru, I saw this woman sitting by herself alone with her thoughts. As dusk was approaching. she seemed to be in perfect harmony with all around her. It was a moment in time that I couldn’t resist taking her picture even though I didn’t know her.

weekly photo challenge: endurance
location: machu picchu, cusco region, peru
dear one, as long as we live in hope, we will endure.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.Emily Dickinson

machu picchu is one of the seven wonders of the new world.
it’s an ancient site built by the incas in the 15th century and abandoned a century later. it’s located 7,970 feet above sea level in the andes mountains where it remained unperturbed and hidden to outsiders through the centuries until it was discovered by hiram bingham in 1911.
i heard that it would be a rewarding experience to get there on foot, but it comes with a price. it would be a strenuous uphill climb that takes hours or days depending on the route you choose. the best option for many is to take the train, which we did.
