McDonald’s

It was late afternoon in Nuremberg, Germany. As we walked to our hotel, the famous golden arch sign greeted us. Suddenly, we felt the urge for the United Tastes of America as the fast food’s tray liner says.

McDonald’s is one of America’s most popular exports. In 2018, it’s estimated that there are more than 37,000 McDonald’s restaurants worldwide. It makes Americans feel home away from home in the same manner other nationalities do when they visit restaurants catering to their native food.

Traveling is an opportunity to experience different cultures and food. It can be exciting, broaden our outlook and change our lives forever. At the same time, a chance encounter with something familiar like Big Mac and fries can help keep our perspective and remind us where we have come from.

McDonald's Crispy Chicken

McDonald’s Crispy Chicken

While in Hungary, we visited a middle school in Recsk. Since it was a holiday, we didn’t get to meet any students. One of the senior teachers, however, was gracious enough to play host. She ushered us into the room where she’s teaching English and made us sit on her students’ desks.

Hungarian Teacher

She gave an orientation on Hungary’s school system. I remember her saying that, in middle school, every student is required to learn a foreign language. Most students pick English because of their interest in pop music. In college, every student must learn two foreign languages and pass the proficiency test on both languages before he can graduate. She said that adding foreign languages to the curriculum give the students an advantage in dealing with the outside world.

We had lunch at the school cafeteria where we were served what students normally eat.

I had fried chicken which looked eeringly familiar. It was like my favorite chicken at Mcdonald’s without the bun. There was no surprise there. McDonald’s is one of the school’s biggest donors.

Bergen Mcdonald's

Location: Bergen, Norway

McDonald’s is one of America’s most famous exports. According to statistics, it has 36,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries around the world.

Wherever I travel, I always look for it. It’s like home away from home. It’s not for the food, silly, but for its restrooms. When you really have to go, you’d find them up to standard.

McDonald’s is usually easy to find with its big golden arc sign displayed prominently in its location. It’s part of its DNA.

Science has noted, however, that DNA is dynamic and adaptable and subject to change as a result of environmental factors. That’s what came to mind when I came across McDonald’s in Bergen, Norway last month. Its looks has gone a complete transformation in line with the efforts of preserving the image of the historic neighborhood where it’s located. Fortunately for consumers, the high quality of its food, services, and restrooms remains the same.

McDonald's Sign
Location: Eger, Hungary

The golden ‘M’ of McDonald’s has become one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture. I find it comforting that it’s all over the world. Wherever I travel, I look for the familiar sign and pay it a visit. The food tastes the same, of course. But I don’t go there for the food. I go there for the restroom.

Restrooms vary from country to country. Since it’s taboo to discuss toilet etiquette in public, use of any of these restrooms is done at your own risk and by following strict standards of conduct. In addition, they aren’t as clean as you would expect (even if there’s a charge to get in) and sometimes smell so bad that only the desperate can find relief there. At McDonald’s, you can rest assured that the facilities are much, much better.
