Weekly Photo Challenge: I’d Rather Be…

Venus de Milo
Location: The Louvre, Paris, France

On our third day in Paris, we went to Musée du Louvre (The Louvre) located on the right side of the Seine river.

It’s one of the largest museums in the world with an area over 650,000 square feet. Its 300 rooms have 35,000 exhibits on display from prehistoric times to the 21st century. These include the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Code of Hummurabi, and Winged Victory.

The Louvre Crowd

The lines were long and too crowded to offer a moment for reflection and even take good pictures, but there was no other place I’d rather be especially on a rainy day.

Our guide said it would be impossible to cover everything in one visit. The best strategy then was to prioritize what you wanted to see and plan on coming back someday.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Victory

Winged Victory of Samothrace
Location: Musée du Louvre, Paris, France

I took this picture of the marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike. Dating as far back as 2 BC, it’s displayed at the Louvre in Paris. It’s also known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace where it was found in 1863. Despite losing its head and arms, it’s still a thing of beauty and attracts a huge crowd.

Life is a struggle. It’s just the way it is. You have to learn to fight tooth and claw to survive. Every difficulty surmounted is a triumph of the spirit. The greater the challenge, the higher you soar. It must be for this reason that the Greek goddess Nike had wings. She was meant to inspire the ancient Greeks to greater heights.

Many historians have speculated about the purpose of the statue. According to one school of thought, it was commissioned to commemorate the defeat of King Perseus by the Romans in 166 BC in the island of Samothrace. But nobody really knows.
