Weekly Photo Challenge: Order

Stockholm, Sweden

Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Whenever I travel, I make it a point to visit the neighborhood market away from the usual tourist spots. It offers a glimpse of local life and the people living in it.

Above is a picture that I took in Stockholm, Sweden. I marveled at the care and attention that the vendor was giving to his offerings, arranging them in a neat and orderly manner, making them more attractive to prospective buyers.

In a way, it could sum up my impressions of Sweden after visiting it for the first time last summer. The people are well-dressed, polite, modest, and law-abiding with a high sense of order and organization. While they’re open-minded, they also value their privacy and keep to themselves especially in the presence of strangers. As a borderline introvert, these are traits that I find endearing and feel comfortable with. Trust me, I’m going back to this beautiful country again.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Surprise

Margaret Krook

Location: Stockholm, Sweden
A bronze statue stands outside the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm. It belongs to Margaret Krook, Sweden’s most beloved stage and movie actress who died in 2001. It’s placed on the same spot where she went for smoke break in between rehearsals.

From the distance, it looks uninviting and cold like any other statue. But surprise! Tourists who stop by to pay homage to Margaret Krook and touch her statue find it warm. Marie-Louise Ekman, the artist who created it, made sure it stays warm to room temperature using heating coils all year through.

Over the years, the statue has experienced discoloration due to exposure to the elements and the thousands of hands touching and rubbing it especially around the belly area. It’s maybe time to restore the statue back to its former glory.
