Mmm Monday: Turkish Kokoreç

Please share a photo of your favorite delicacy by clicking Mr. Linky below. Thank you.

Kokoreç
Location: Istanbul, Turkey

Kokoreç or Kokoretsi is a popular street food in Istanbul, Turkey. It’s seasoned lamb intestines roasted on a horizontal skewer as shown in the picture.

It may look unappetizing for the uninitiated but it actually tastes good if you don’t let your imagination go too far. Afiyet Olsun (Bon appétit).

Weekly Photo Challenge: Rise/Set

Istanbul Sunset
Location: Istanbul, Turkey

This picture was taken while cruising around the Bosphorus Straight. It was a beautiful sight. I couldn’t help myself singing a song from the Fiddler on the Roof:

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears…

Now comes the question: Sunrise or sunset? Unless you took it yourself, it would be hard to tell. Sunrise and sunset are like two peas in a pod. It’s difficult to tell one from the other.

If you insist to know, though, I can give you a hint: I’m not a morning person.

Belly Dance Customes

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

The Spice Bazaar is one of the popular attractions in Istanbul. When I went to visit, I didn’t expect to see belly dancing costumes in all their glory. They didn’t seem to belong there. But on second thought, I figured they probably did. As you see, belly dancing does provide spice and Turkish delights to its aficionados.

The belly dancing costumes were lovely, displayed beautifully. They were arranged in various sizes and shades of color in such a way to engage one’s imagination and attract potential buyers. Truth to tell, I couldn’t imagine myself wearing one, so I just took a picture while the vendor wasn’t looking, distracted by a customer.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Wish

Wishing Wall

Location: Sultaniye Mahallesi, Selçuk, Izmir, Turkey

A wishing wall can be found near the House of the Virgin Mary where it’s said she spent the last days of her earthly life. According to tradition, you tie a piece of your cloth for every wish you make and when the wish is granted you come back and untie the cloth.

Popular among Catholic and Muslim devotees, the House of Mary sits on top of Mt. Koressos about five miles from the ancient ruins of Ephesus in Turkey. It was discovered in 1881 based on the visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), a Bavarian nun who was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

Although several Popes had visited it in the past, the Roman Catholic Church has never officially declared its authenticity as the house of the Virgin Mary and Mother of Jesus.
