Weekly Photo Challenge: Wish

Wishing Wall

Location: Sultaniye Mahallesi, Selçuk, Izmir, Turkey

A wishing wall can be found near the House of the Virgin Mary where it’s said she spent the last days of her earthly life. According to tradition, you tie a piece of your cloth for every wish you make and when the wish is granted you come back and untie the cloth.

Popular among Catholic and Muslim devotees, the House of Mary sits on top of Mt. Koressos about five miles from the ancient ruins of Ephesus in Turkey. It was discovered in 1881 based on the visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), a Bavarian nun who was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

Although several Popes had visited it in the past, the Roman Catholic Church has never officially declared its authenticity as the house of the Virgin Mary and Mother of Jesus.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Eye Spy

Shoe Shine
Location: On the Road to Konya, Turkey

This photo was taken as I was waiting for the bus going to Konya, Turkey. I decided to while my time by having my shoes shined. As a result, I had become an object of curiosity from a passing tourist.

As tourists nowadays, we have become more like safari hunters. Instead of guns, we have our cameras. We go to a place and think we own it. We feel so entitled to shoot at anything that moves. With digital cameras and phones equipped with large capacity memory cards, the practice has exacerbated to the point of being disrespectful, intrusive, and rude. Small wonder we aren’t as welcome as we used to be. Instead of a smile, we’re greeted with a frown.

Don’t get me wrong. Pictures we take from a trip make it more memorable. At the same time, a question needs to be asked. Where do we draw the line?
