i was wrong and glad i was

argentine cardinal jorge mario bergoglio is the new pope. a seagull acted as the harbinger of good news. it sat on top of the chimney and flew away just before the white smoke emerged announcing his election. he chose the name francis, the first pope to be called by that name.

darn, i thought it would be cardinal tarcisio pietro evasio bertone. do i have to eat my shorts now? have mercy on me.

the election to the successor of pope benedict xvi didn’t last longer than i expected. i was thinking it would take at least around st. patrick’s day. what this means is that a front-runner among the cardinals had already been established even before the first vote was cast. it took just four more votes to get him elected.

weekly photo challenge: lost in the details




 
the vatican is one of those places where it can be an overwhelming experience. when you try to contemplate on the grandeur of it all, you tend to get lost in the details like these filipino nuns walking in the rain and the other unsung workers who have made it all possible.

i confess that i don’t like taking pictures of people without their permission, but this time i’m glad i made an exception.
