Connor was young and restless. Enlisting in the Army opened the door for his dream of glory. After boot camp, he went to fight in the Vietnam war. From the start, he was fearless. His courage was a cup full to the brim.

But as the dark realities of the conflict sank in and finding himself engaged in one ferocious battle after another, his cup started to empty until there was nothing much left to keep his fighting spirit alive.

Sweating profusely and summoning his last ounce of courage, he shot himself in the foot for a one-way ticket home.

War Memorial

Outside the Garden of Eden, a mound of rocks stood. It was a fitting burial and memorial for Abel, who was the first human to die in the hands of his brother.

“Where is your brother?” God asked Cain after he had murdered Abel.

“I know not; am I my brother’s keeper?” Cain answered, whereupon he was duly condemned and punished for a life of wandering.

It would be the portent of things to come. All throughout history, succeeding generations have been at war and built shrines and structures to remember the horror that they have wrought on each other.

Zara found herself in danger of becoming a sex slave when ISIS overran their village. This led her brother Jiwan to escort her to the Syrian border to save her.

With the border in sight, they made a dash for it. Fear never crossed her mind even when shots rang out. She felt safe beside her brother who protected her since they were young.

Suddenly, Jiwan fell, fatally shot.

“Jiwan!” she cried.

“Go,” she remembered him saying, blood coming out of his mouth.

“But Jiwan.”

“Go… Go…”

Zara survived and later joined an all-women volunteer force to fight the invaders.

“Promise, you’d come back.”

“I promise,” Tom told Sara when he went to war.

It was the promise he kept reminding himself as he waded to shore amid heavy enemy fire on Omaha beach that day.

It was all behind him now. Finally, he was coming home.

“Sara, Sara, I’m back,” Tom cried, rushing through the front door. But she just ignored him.

Meanwhile, on Omaha beach…

“Brave kid,” the medic said referring to the soldier he tried to save. “With all the pain he had to endure, he never gave up.” Among the personal effects, he found Sara’s picture.

Spoils of War

For Friday Fictioneers 100-word challenge 3 October 2014

Note: This story was inspired by current events in northern Iraq. The evil that men do in the name of Islam is giving it a bad reputation it doesn’t deserve.

It was past noon when the Army of God came to the village. The men and the boys were executed. The women and the girls were kept in a safe house as spoils of war.

Mariam recognized the man in charge as the kindly gentleman who used to give out lollipops in their neighborhood.

“I’ll spare you and your sisters,” he said one night, “just be nice to me.”

He then took Mariam to his room and began to undress her.

“Please, sir, no,” she meekly protested.

In another room, Mariam’s sisters were asleep totally unaware of her muffled cries.
