For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 11 March 2016
It seemed like yesterday, but it’d been awhile since we saw each other.
Emily and I were high school sweethearts. After graduation, I joined the army and she went to study art in Paris. We broke up believing a long distance relationship wouldn’t work for us.
I was hoping that having dinner with her that evening would rekindle the love we once had.
But it didn’t. She had found someone new.
A light drizzle greeted us as we left the restaurant.
“This is where I go,” she said. “Have a great life.”
And with that, she turned and walked away.

So the relationship did not last, at least he is in Paris.

mike:
when he got stationed in germany, he went to see her right away, but by then it was too late.
3. ansumani | March 9, 2016 at 5:40 pm
Looks like that childhood love magic wasn’t that strong. Nicely done.
4. plaridel | March 9, 2016 at 6:30 pm
ansumani:
such is life.
5. Pleats and Keats | March 9, 2016 at 6:42 pm
This song is gorgeous. I used to listen to it all the time in Paris…
6. plaridel | March 9, 2016 at 11:12 pm
pleats and keats:
i agree. great music and lyrics, too.
7. luckyjc007 | March 9, 2016 at 8:17 pm
Too bad the dinner didn’t work for him, she apparently needed something more.😃

jessie:
sad to say, she had moved on.

Dear Plaridel,
Bittersweet story. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

rochelle:
if anything, he was happy for her.
11. draliman | March 10, 2016 at 4:24 am
I can’t help thinking it’s good that she moved on rather than hanging around, I hope he can do the same.
12. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 10:14 am
draliman:
in time, he’d find love again.
13. Sandra | March 10, 2016 at 4:30 am
That was quite sad, plaintive almost. Well done
14. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 10:13 am
sandra:
separation drew them apart. he should learn to live with it.
15. mickwynn2013 | March 10, 2016 at 4:32 am
You have to feel for him,he wanted so much more and there was nothing.
16. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 10:13 am
mick:
if there’s a lesson, it’s that we can’t have everything.
17. mickwynn2013 | March 10, 2016 at 10:35 am
That, unfortunately I seem to learn more with each passing day ☹
18. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 11:26 pm
mick:
i totally agree.
19. FabricatingFiction | March 10, 2016 at 7:03 am
I hope the meal was good anyway!
20. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 10:12 am
louise:
it was good. he was enjoying until she said the word.
21. Dreamer of Dreams | March 10, 2016 at 4:17 pm
A moving, atmospheric story! I like how it hovers on the edge of sentimentality and self-pity, then pulls back from the brink. Perfect!
22. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 11:25 pm
vijaya:
thank you for reading. i deeply appreciate your support.
23. Dreamer of Dreams | March 11, 2016 at 9:09 pm
My pleasure!
24. Perry Block (@PerryBlock) | March 10, 2016 at 10:09 pm
She sounds really cute, do you have her number?
25. plaridel | March 10, 2016 at 11:25 pm
perry:
sorry, but she’s already taken. 😦
26. rgayer55 | March 11, 2016 at 4:01 am
Alas, a one-sided love fantasy.
27. plaridel | March 11, 2016 at 7:34 pm
russell:
alas, indeed. but not the end of the world. he’d live.
28. gahlearner | March 11, 2016 at 9:03 am
Beautiful. Some childhood loves are keepers, some are not. At least he knows right away and get over it.
29. plaridel | March 11, 2016 at 7:33 pm
gahlearner:
people change. it’s a fact of life.
30. aliciajamtaas | March 11, 2016 at 11:27 am
Well, this is certainly sad. The music goes nicely with the story. I’m glad I listened to it while reading your piece.
31. plaridel | March 11, 2016 at 7:33 pm
alicia:
thank you for reading as usual. i deeply appreciate it.
32. Amy Reese | March 11, 2016 at 3:44 pm
Oh, well that was quite abrupt of her. No number exchange? What about Christmas cards or Facebook? Sometimes it’s just easier to move on. Good one, Plaridel.
33. plaridel | March 11, 2016 at 7:33 pm
amy:
absence didn’t make the heart grow fonder in this case.
34. Amy Reese | March 11, 2016 at 8:04 pm
Apparently not. It just wasn’t meant to be.
35. wmqcolby | March 11, 2016 at 5:30 pm
Aww. Sad. Been there, done that too many times. Well done, Plaridel!
36. plaridel | March 11, 2016 at 7:32 pm
kent:
don’t we all? 😦
37. athling2001 | March 12, 2016 at 1:37 pm
Poor guy. Just means there is something better out there for him.
38. plaridel | March 13, 2016 at 10:15 am
athling2001:
somehow he should learn to love again.
39. liz young | March 12, 2016 at 11:30 pm
Perhaps they had avoided a long painful breakup by cutting ties when they did?
40. plaridel | March 13, 2016 at 10:17 am
liz:
that was the idea. he needed to learn to let go.
41. patriciaruthsusan | March 15, 2016 at 4:27 am
What a shame. He should have given it a try. She might have thought he didn’t care enough. Well done, Plaridel. Thanks for the music. —- Suzanne
