For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 11 March 2016

It seemed like yesterday, but it’d been awhile since we saw each other.

Emily and I were high school sweethearts. After graduation, I joined the army and she went to study art in Paris. We broke up believing a long distance relationship wouldn’t work for us.

I was hoping that having dinner with her that evening would rekindle the love we once had.

But it didn’t. She had found someone new.

A light drizzle greeted us as we left the restaurant.

“This is where I go,” she said. “Have a great life.”

And with that, she turned and walked away.

Looks like that childhood love magic wasn’t that strong. Nicely done.

A moving, atmospheric story! I like how it hovers on the edge of sentimentality and self-pity, then pulls back from the brink. Perfect!
